Test summary:

review 2018 FirstMet:

FirstMet, formerly AYI, has been revamped… and it's not half bad!

Starting in the form of a Facebook dating app in 2007, FirstMet can now boast more than 30,000,000 users. If you happen to have an old account on AYI, there is no need to worry: you'll still be able to use it!

The aim of FirstMet.com is simple: to give adults a "low pressure" method of meeting new and exciting people. It is aimed at singles who are 35 and up, although we encountered quite a few younger people on this mobile app as well!

When You First Login to FirstMet

Singles usually login to FirstMet with Facebook. It makes the sign up process quicker, without you having to put much thought into your profile. At the beginning you also choose which gender you're interested in, though you can only choose one (no searching for everyone). Users can also sign up the old-fashioned way through email… however…

…you remain invisible until you post a profile picture!

Interests are also important to put down! If you aren't using Facebook then you won't have very much for the matching algorithm to go by, so interests are the best way of connecting you with other singles!

FirstMet.com in Australia

Many of the Australian profiles on Firstmet are from Facebook. There are a lot of active ones available as well, though it is a bit obvious that lots of the profiles have just been leftover from beforehand. However: a lot of potential remains for those who want to meet someone near them, though it may take time. If you want a faster meetup, Zoosk is often a lot quicker!

FirstMet: Desktop vs. Mobile App

The difference between desktop and mobile versions of the FirstMet app are minimal. The entire service is designed to provide a smooth, minimalistic design which gets down to the point and isn't cluttered with unnecessary features. Users can download it for both iOS and Android sysems, which is definintely a big plus if you want to use FirstMet.com on the go!

First Contact on FirstMet

Contacting singles can be a problem on dating apps and FirstMet has managed to get around that with their "Are You Interested?" function. "Matches" will be proposed to you (primarily based on mutual friends, interests, location and distance). It is up to you to swipe through them, answering either "Yes or "Skip".

There is also a filter available which lets you filter out singles based on age, distance and ethnicity.

Users can take a peek at the profile before they make their decisions. When you do click on "Yes", a contact proposal bubble appears. There is space to write a message, but what if you've no idea what do say? Dead simple: suggestions will appear to help you. For example:

  • How tech savvy are you?
  • Do you believe in love at first site?
  • Do you enjoy cuddling?
  • Would you consider sleeping with someone on the first date?

OK, we appreciate that some of these questions are a little bit odd, especially for a first meeting. However, whatever comes up will help you to get those creative juices flowing and give you the much-needed confidence to message someone.

The Icebreaker Feature...

...is yet another useful tool that FirstMet offers singles in order to get them talking. Much like the swipe feature, the Icebreaker proposes a list of conversation starters and general questions, all with a mind to getting something going. These can include things like, "Is someone's astrological sign important to you?" or "What do you like to do on Saturday night?"

Once contact has been established, there is an instant messaging service to help things run more rsmoothly if you'd like to chat!

FirstMet Premium Services

There is of course far more to FirstMet than just establishing contact. Members who choose to upgrade will get a variety of features available to them. For example, you will be able to see what friends you have in common with your matches, read all of your mail and even unlock your messages in your matches’ inboxes. You can also see who viewed your profile.

If you happen to have any problems, premium FirstMet.com members can avail of top-notch customer service!

FirstMet - Costs:

  • Download, registration and sign up are all free, as is instant messaging.
  • Extra features, includingd unlimited messaging, start from $12.50/month.
